Chapter Twelve

We discussed our day and the nothing that we learned from it over a quick cocktail as Ursula and I grabbed our drag bags and costumes.

“Girl, you are gonna be Vicki all day and Raven all night for the next few days. Hope you don’t get it twisted and start reciting prose when you should be twerking.” Ursula laughed.

“I’m safe. I can’t twerk.” I replied acidly, stuffing some rhinestone heels into a bag. “My ass has never been able to jiggle that fast. But I am having a small identity crisis right now. There is too much going on, and I’m not keeping the car in between the lines.”

“Oh, girl… Momma will soccer mom you if you start to careen off the road. Promise. I was a girl scout.” Ursula beamed at me, a wicked gleam in her eye.

“Harper, you coming tonight?” Cory asked as he fell onto my couch, looking exhausted.

“No. I have way too much to go over. I’m headed back to the office.”

“All of the girls are coming tonight. Should be fun.” Cory said without any energy.

“Unless someone dies.” Ursula giggled. “Sorry, not funny. So, Domino was a bust, huh? I know you wanted it to be him.” Ursula shook her head, making her afro sway back and forth with furiosity.

“It seems so. He’s still an asshole, though.” I ran into the dining room looking for a pair of earrings I was sure I stuffed into the drawer of my buffet. I kept china, wine glasses, and rhinestones in there. They all sparkled, so it made sense to me.

“You really think everyone is coming tonight?” I asked Cory, a very bad idea slapping me across the head.

“Sure. It’s almost like a kick-off to the event, isn’t it? I mean, the two of you on stage together is a big deal. They’ll all be there.” Cory cuddled up against the side of the couch. Poor sweet baby was beat.

I finished packing and made a decision. Ursula and I were about to become criminals.

“Those footprints at the door came back from the state with a little more information. They were Nike Shadows, and they still believe they were size twelve. The imprint was made from spilled face powder.” Harper sat down his phone. “That’s all they have, but at least it’s more.”

“Face powder? That could have been from any girl in the hotel that had to walk by that door, or even Lil’ Debbie herself. Did you find any makeup residue in the room?” Ursula sipped her cocktail and watched me buzz around my house, straightening up. My house had become strewn with shit, and it was driving me crazy.

“Nothing. Her makeup was still packed in her bags.” Harper pulled his feet up underneath him and rested his head on his hand. “Had to be from outside.”

“But you didn’t see any residue anywhere else?” I added. “If someone spilled a powder container out of their bag and it opened, it would have gotten over everything.”

“No, it was just in that one spot where the shoe print was.
